RGH E-Bulletin: Lithium-induced diabetes insipidus : 04/10/2010 :
The topic of this week's RGH E‑Bulletin is Lithium-induced diabetes insipidus
"Lithium remains the gold standard of pharmacological treatment of bipolar disorder. Adverse effects include weight gain, tremor, diarrhoea, polyuria and diabetes insipidus, which can occur in up to 40% of those treated. Drug induced diabetes insipidus is always of the nephrogenic type, thought to be due in part to the lack of response to antidiuretic hormone by aquaporins (water transport channels) in the collecting ducts of the nephrons, which are in turn responsible for the urinary concentrating mechanism."

Any travel plans now that pharmacist registration is nationalised? : 01/10/2010 :
Nationalisation of registration and the travel opportunities it offers appears not to have stimulated huge excitement amongst AusPharmListers in this week's poll.
Of those who voted, 63% are not inclined to work interstate due to the nationalisation of registration.
37% of voters are planning to work interstate over the next 12 to 24 months and almost half of these are approaching work across borders as a working holiday. One quarter of interstate workers don't see the travel as a bonus; it's just another job you have to travel to get to.

Poll: Has nationalisation of registration affected your plans to work interstate? : 29/09/2010 :
In theory, nationalisation of pharmacist registration should be a great enabler for pharmacists in Australia. Removing this barrier to working interstate means a pharmacist can more readily take "working holidays" in all corners of the country. There is nothing quite like the bona fides of working in a new environment to get below the surface, rather than just travelling through as 100% tourist looking at the scenery.
Grey nomads, pharmacists from oveseas, and young (and not so young), pharmacists without the sort of committments that tie them to one place, could find nationalisation a real boon. But theory and practice don't always align. Let us know whether this has changed your work plans by voting in this week's AusPharm poll.

Oxycodone - current pharmacist resources & real time reporting : 29/09/2010 :
In the wake of ABC Four Corners' provocative TV programme this week on abuse of prescription oxycodone products in Australia, pharmacy organisations have reminded pharmacists of the resources available to help identify and handle problematic prescribing and help manage patients prescribed analgesics for chronic pain.
The Pharmacy Guild is strongly advocating the adoption of real time reporting to track dispensing of problematic medicines like oxycodone, adapting Project Stop technology.
However real time reporting (RTR) has already been introduced in Tasmania where Federal Health Connect funding in July 2008 allowed the Tasmanian Pharmaceutical Services Branch (PSB) to put in place the technology to move from monthly to real time reporting of the dispensing of schedule 8 medicines and alprazolam.

Minority governments need a different approach : 28/09/2010 :
At the Annual General Meeting and Dinner of the A.C.T. Branch of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia, held last Wednesday night in Canberra, the Treasurer and Minister for Health in the A.C.T. Legislative Assembly, Katy Gallagher spoke about the differences in approach to governing taken by minority governments (A.C.T. currently has a minority Labor Government, with the support of the Greens).
She highlighted that fact that lobbyists, industry groups and professional bodies will need to change their style, and realise that the Independents will all have to be part of any campaign they undertake.
Pictured at right (L to R) are Katy Gallagher with A.C.T. Guild Branch President, Amanda Galbraith (click the photo for a larger version).

Interpreting evidence for complicated cases : 28/09/2010 :
Evidence is presented in many ways and to interpret various patient and disease-related outcomes can be both confronting and confusing.
However, systems and resources exist to help take complex information and adjust outcomes to reflect the potential benefit, or risk, specific to a patient. Such resources are particularly useful in complicated cases and help to reduce the degree of subjectivity in the decision-making process.
The importance of effectively using these resources to arrive at positive outcomes is examined at PAC10 in the Advanced Clinical session on Applying Evidence to the Individual by Senior Health Services Research Fellow in Medicine at Monash University. Greg Duncan who will present on Interpreting Evidence for Complicated Cases.
